Dr. Andy Meeko is a second generation missionary to Japan whose parents arrived in 1947. Author and conference speaker he also directs Family Life Japan, which seeks to strengthen and bring healing to homes. He lives with his wife and four children in Yamagata, Japan.
 We are convinced. There is some sort of spiritual stranglehold when it comes to depression. It's everywhere. In Japan, it affects one in seven. However, for middle school kids, it's one in four. For young women it's one in three. Only 10% of depression sufferers seek help. Depression is neglected-continually on the run-and it appears to only be getting worse. Every week we bump into it in people around us-in both unbeliever and Christian alike. So what's really vexing is that we are unaware of any Christian ministry significantly focused on this issue-there is no one to direct people to. Seemingly, few want to touch this thing! So I sensed maybe we should. Sure, no money, no facilities, and some might think, no qualifications, but things are desperate. When I explained the idea to June she exclaimed, "Do you know what you're getting into?" Certainly we aren't planning to counsel 15 million depressed people, certainly things look overwhelming, but we are launching out into deep waters. And a confirmation after Andy's Japan trip came, a letter to us by a young Christian mother in Japan-she had just slit her wrists. Step one involves the creation of a website dedicated to prevention and recovery from depression. We began this project in Tokyo last month and the possibilities are exciting. High quality video messages and testimonies, daily meditations, and the friend's connection for helping people to join a small group in their area. Much, much work in mobilizing a volunteer network is on the horizon. Sure its in Japanese, but come take a peak! 
In JapanCommercial TV crew zooms in on Andy's father's post war films during Andy's recent visit to Japan. A Monday was scheduled for interview at the studio, but when the producer learned I was preaching at church on Sunday he asked if he could attend-boy that was a no-brainer answer! It was his first time to ever attend church in his life. I immediately scrapped my planned message and gave and evangelistic one! Still waiting on the future broadcast date. PS. It turns out the videographer's father was a graduate of my mother's Christian kindergarten. 
Seatle Ignite - Couples SeminarNumerous Japanese churches in the Seattle Metro have invited Andy to do a one day marriage seminar on November 18. Please pray for healing and empowerment of these couples. Japan Trivia What does Japan buy more of than anyone else? Somebody has to support the world's most sophisticated railway system. Japan wrote-the-book on the mobile phone. The most complicated language in the world, and its still over 99% literate! Well…when everyone is born with it black, I guess it's a temptation.
